How Far So Near
collaborations in gulf-crossing, multispecies empathy:
How Far So Near by Angela Bartram and Lee Deigaard
To an Imagined Eye on Behalf of Another by Lee Deigaard and Mandy-Suzanne Wong
Carroll Gallery, Tulane University, New Orleans, USA
January 17 - February 23, 2023
An exhibition of transoceanic, international collaborations by multimedia artists Angela Bartram and Lee Deigaard and writer Mandy-Suzanne Wong, exploring multiplicities of mind and being, multispecies empathy, and considerate coexistences.
From Deigaard’s studio on the US Gulf Coast, through the Gulf Stream in the midst of which is Wong’s Bermuda home, flowing northeast on the Atlantic Ocean’s warm internal river to Bartram’s Nottingham, UK, and all the way back again in meshing currents: communications intersect and echo other awarenesses, knowledges, sensoria. Humans have the technology to amplify our calls across vast distances; farther even than the elephants, who rumble subsonically to summon and sense the other from many miles away. From human to human, human to animal, through channels apart from sound, proximal presence, or touch: gulf as rift doubles back on itself to gulf’s alternate meaning as an oceanographic convergence. The collaborators share an oxygen, a sense of hope and enmeshment through communication much like any animal calling to another from far branches and being answered in kind.
This exhibition explores iterative and connective processes of twinning and doubling; of companionate mirroring, transcription, and translation; of connecting and echoing within the greater emptying, weaving new enmeshments with animality and parity against the vanishing—all in hope of holding open the space of memory, the gulfs which are so necessary to love at any remove, even beyond death, in service.
To an Imagined Eye on Behalf of Another
Lee Deigaard and Mandy-Suzanne Wong
A cow unlocks her creative potential and defiant personality, inspiring artists across oceans. This installation is an outgrowth of real-time, improvised duets in writing: an ongoing contemplation of caregiving between strangers, between species, across irreducible distances. Collaborative dreams take visible form as cyanotypes, drawings, collage poems, and stories manifesting in a burgeoning mesh of mutual inspiration between two humans, an ocean, and the valiant cow Aida.
How Far So Near
Bartram+Deigaard
In the exhibition’s title work, Angela Bartram and Lee Deigaard commemorate long moments of gazing towards each other across time zones and continents. Video projections, photographic composites, data collections, and accordion books are traces of attention received and returned not only between the artists, but also between these two humans and the nonhuman phenomena which constitute their environments.
